Alpine History

Formerly known as Alpine Alpa, the restaurant was built in 1935 by Alice and Hans Grossniklaus, a Swiss cheese maker and his wife. The Grossniklaus family realized the opportunity for tourism in the Holmes County area and added numerous attractions to the restaurant, including the famous World's Largest Cuckoo Clock, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

In 1983, local artist Tom Miller was commissioned to paint animated dioramas (three-dimensional murals) of the Swiss Alps throughout the dining and banquet rooms.

In August of 2002 Ann DeHass (owner of Grandma's Homestead Restaurant), her daughter Lee Ann Miller, and Lee Ann's husband, Daryl purchased Alpine Alpa and renamed it Grandma's Alpine Homestead.
